Ohio authorities launched a triple homicide investigation after three women were found dead at a "very unusual" and "complex" scene, said police.

Officers arrived at the Columbus, Ohio home Saturday afternoon to investigate a medical distress call placed by the victims' friend. Upon arrival, police located three deceased adult females in what they described to be a "very complex scene."

"It's very unusual to have so many victims in one incident," Sgt. James Fuqua with the Columbus Police Department told reporters at a news briefing that same day. "One homicide is one too many. But when you have three, that's particularly alarming and troubling to us."

Fuqua said the killings were considered homicides, but would not elaborate on manners of death at the time. In an update Sunday, police confirmed the victims were shot to death, according to WBNS-TV.

Their identities are being withheld pending next of kin notification.

"Any time of year, it's unfortunate when someone loses their life, but particularly this time of year, during the holidays, it's going to be very difficult for all of these victims' families to come to grips that unfortunately these family members will no longer be in their lives," Fuqua said Saturday.

Witnesses are being interviewed as a motive remains under investigation.

No arrests have been made.
