Newberg-Dundee Public Schools in Oregon will pay $90,000 to settle a whistleblower lawsuit filed by teacher Eileen Brennock, who alleged retaliation for advocating for LGBTQ+ students.

The dispute began in 2021 when the district banned Pride flags, Black Lives Matter signs, and other political symbols, sparking community protests. Brennock claimed her principal, Terry McElligot of Mountain View Middle School, discouraged staff from supporting LGBTQ+ students.

"It's not okay to tell kids it's okay to be gay or trans," McElligot allegedly said in a staff meeting. Brennock reported the comments to her assistant principal, stating that if a student came out to her as gay, she would respond, "me too." That's when Brennock claims her work environment became hostile, leading her to file a complaint, KTLA reported.

The Oregon Department of Education determined the district violated the state's Anti-Discrimination Law. Although the district denied liability, it agreed to settle and affirmed its commitment to inclusivity in a public statement.

"The district is pleased to have this matter resolved," officials said. "The district reaffirms its dedication to promoting an inclusive, welcoming and equitable school and work environment for all students and staff."
