President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his support for Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth despite growing concerns over the nominee's confirmation prospects. Hegseth, a former Fox News host and military veteran, faces allegations of alcohol abuse and sexual assault, as well as mismanagement of funds, which have prompted skepticism among some Senate Republicans.
Trump took to Truth Social on Friday, affirming his confidence in Hegseth and characterizing him as a "high energy" leader with strong qualifications. Trump also praised Hegseth's academic background, highlighting his education at Princeton and Harvard. He also claimed he has the "charisma and skill" necessary for the role and declared that Hegseth is "a winner", dismissing reports of wavering support as "fake news."
The statement follows reports that Trump is considering alternatives for the position, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis, a former Navy lawyer and a 2024 GOP primary rival for the presidency, was on an earlier list of potential candidates for the post but lost out to the former Fox News host. DeSantis is scheduled to attend the Army-Navy football game with Trump next week, fueling speculation about his potential nomination.
Vice president-elect J.D. Vance also voiced support for Hegseth on his X account, posting a screenshot of Trump's post along with a caption that argued in support of Hegeseth's leadership:
"Led by President Trump, we're fighting for Pete Hegseth. And we're doing so because Pete Hegseth wil fight for our troops. For too long, the Pentagon has been led by people who lose wars. Pete Hegseth is a man who fought in those wars. We've got his back"
In response to Vance's post, Hegseth wrote back: "Thank you Mr. President. Like you, we will never back down."
