The owner of a South Carolina pet hospital was allegedly shot "multiple times" in the back by his veterinarian wife just weeks after he filed for divorce, according to court documents.
Jennifer Kerri Ray allegedly shot her former husband Greg Baughman "multiple times in the back and multiple while he was lying on the floor" with "malice afterthought," according to an arrest warrant obtained by WRDW.
Baughman, 43, was declared dead at the scene after first responders discovered him with gunshot wounds Sunday evening in a home in Prides Crossing, South Carolina, as reported by WFXG.
The former husband had previously filed for divorce on Oct. 25, however the two had not been living together since late August. Baughman had requested that their assets and debts be split, but was not seeking alimony or spousal support, according to court filings obtained by WRDW.
Baughman did not reportedly request protection from domestic abuse, but did ask for a "no adverse contact" order, court filings stated.
Ray, 44, was taken into custody at the scene of the crime on Sunday. She has been charged with murder and weapon possession, and is being held at the Aiken County Detention Center, as reported by the Augusta Press.
Hitchcock Animal Hospital, which was owned by both Baughman and Ray, closed early the day following the shooting, but has pledged to remain open.
"We want to take this moment to reaffirm our mission of supporting both the animals we treat and the people who love them. While we cannot comment on individual circumstances, we stand for compassion, understanding, and kindness in all situations," the hospital wrote on Facebook.
