The man who allegedly attempted to assassinate then-presidential candidate Donald Trump back in September explicated his political beliefs in a recently published letter in which he even compares himself to the perpetrator of the first attempt on Trump's life, Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Routh allegedly sent a four-page letter to Ankush Khardori, a senior POLITICO writer and former federal prosecutor, in which he repeatedly references the attempt to assassinate Trump at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
In the letter, Routh consistently refers to himself as the "Trump Alleged Shooter", likely in order to prevent releasing a direct confession. However, one part of the letter mentions Crooks, the man who attempted to assassinate the current President-elect at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Routh compared himself to Crooks, who was killed by a Secret Service sniper. He stated that they had both been "ready to die for freedom and democracy."
He continued to voice his frustrations with the two-party political system, and clarified his political beliefs.
"I am unclear how we allowed ourselves to fall into just a two-party system," Routh wrote, "but it infuriates me. My entire life has been plagued by D's and R's. It seems not long ago there was a push for the libertarian party and now a green party and maybe Truth party. But for some reason our leaders have not allowed any other party [to] be recognized in any race."
A similar letter was sent to The Palm Beach Post earlier this year, supposedly also written by Routh. In it, he once again talks about his political beliefs, admitting that he used to be a Trump supporter, a President he later stated "ended up being brainless".
"Say a poor person with a broken down vehicle blocking the entrance to his house or golf course so he cannot get in — would he get out and help the poor person get the vehicle fixed and moved, or would he yell and bark orders to get the crap out of the way," wrote Routh.
"I have always been the one to pull over to the side of the road and help — it is the American way. But again, I may be wrong, but I imagine Trump yelling and screaming 'to get that piece of s*** moved,' " he continued.
"A guard [in] Palm Beach asked jokingly if I was a democrat — I said, 'NO — Independent — I vote for the best candidate,'" Routh continued in his letter, distancing himself from the Democratic Party.
In August of this year, Routh expressed his desire to see a presidential ticket led by former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
"@NikkiHaley Please join Vivek Ramaswamy as a team of pres and vp; we must do this now to create a winning ticket now that we can all get behind. Please do not be selfish and arrogant; partner now to change the course of the election. Break norms and give us an option," Routh wrote to X (formerly Twitter).
The letter ended with a plea addressed to President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urging them to find peace in the Middle East.
We must demand that Israel stop their attacks and demand that all parties come to the table and find common ground," Routh wrote.
"My fellowmen," Routh concluded, "please demand peace."
