A former Maryland middle school teacher who frequently raped a teen student at several locations, including her mother's house, will spend one year behind bars, despite receiving a 30-year sentence.

On Friday, Melissa Curtis, 32, was informed following 12 months of incarceration, she will spend five years on probation, according to WUSA-TV. For 25 years, she will be forced to register as a sex offender.

In June, Curtis pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree sex offense for the repeated rapes of a then-14-year-old male student at Lakelands Park Middle School, where she taught in Mongtomery County, Maryland, according to WTTG-TV.

In 2015, Curtis, then 22, ran an after-school program together with the eighth grader, who she supplied with alcohol and marijuana, court documents say, according to the outlet.

The pair carried on a sexual relationship on a regular basis, having sex more than 20 times at school, in her car and at her mother's house, documents read.

The victim, now an adult, came forward with sexual assault accusations against Curtis in 2023, according to WRC-TV.
