A New York man who brutally strangled and tortured his wife to death in a rental car now faces the rest of his life behind bars, following his conviction for the grisly crime.
Scott Tyrell, 58, of Peru, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison on Monday after pleading guilty to the murder of his wife, Lisa Dashnaw, in March, according to NBC5.
The sentence also includes an additional four years for the concealment of her body, to be served concurrently.
In May, police discovered Dashnaw's body in the trunk of a rental car at an Enterprise location in Plattsburgh. The autopsy determined she died from asphyxia due to strangulation.
Tyrell admitted, NBC5 disclosed, to killing his wife following a confrontation at their home, then placing her body in the car's trunk. The car was later repossessed by Enterprise on May 28.
During the sentencing, Dashnaw's family spoke out, recounting their pain and loss.
Heather Young, Dashnaw's daughter, tearfully expressed the impact of her mother's death.
"My mother Lisa did not deserve any of this. She was a very caring, loving, beautiful, hardworking, strong and tough person. Life has definitely been different over the past eight months now," she said.
Lisa's sister, Tami Dashnaw, also shared her grief.
"I think about Lisa every day. I cry every day. I am repulsed by the thought of you and what you have done to my sister and our family," she told Tyrell.
District Attorney Andrew J. Wylie pushed for the maximum sentence. In court, Tyrell admitted that drugs played a role in his actions.
"What I did was horrible, horrible, horrible. That's all I got to say. Words are cheap. But I am sorry to the Dashnaw family because I did a very evil thing, what I did," Tyrell said.
Tyrell's specific prison destination remains undetermined, but he has been taken into custody at Clinton County Jail.
