An Indiana mother has been sentenced to 65 years in prison for the starvation death of her 3-month-old son, after lying to investigators about feeding him and neglecting his basic needs.

Caylin Monroe, 23, was found guilty in October of murder and neglect of a dependent resulting in death in connection with the tragic 2022 death of her 3-month-old son, Silas Chance-Kent Scott, according to PEOPLE.

Monroe's sentencing took place on Friday, Nov. 15, a month after her conviction. Silas's autopsy revealed that the infant died from starvation, despite Monroe's initial claim that she had fed him earlier in the day. However, investigators found no formula or milk in the baby's stomach at the time of his death.

The investigation began, PEOPLE revealed, after the Warrick County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an unresponsive infant at the family's home in February 2022.

During an interview with police, Monroe stated that her son was "small, but healthy," and had "difficulty growing." She further explained that she occasionally forgot to feed him if he was quiet or if she was distracted with her other children.

However, the investigation uncovered troubling details about the family's neglect. Monroe had previously been investigated by the Department of Child Services (DCS) over another child, leading her to be required to keep a feeding log.

Despite this, she failed to ensure Silas was properly nourished.

Monroe's partner, Jakob Scott, also faces charges of murder and neglect in connection with Silas's death. Scott, 22, was arrested along with Monroe. During his police interview, Scott reportedly admitted that the baby didn't eat unless he cried and couldn't recall if Silas had been fed on the day of his death.

The trial for Scott, initially set for November, was postponed. His next status conference is scheduled for Dec. 2, as he continues to plead not guilty to the charges.
