The frantic manhunt for a paroled Minnesota inmate accused of killing his pregnant ex during a court-approved visit came to a grisly end when he was fatally shot by police Saturday.

The Ramsey County medical examiner determined Mychel Allan Stowers, 36, died of multiple gunshot wounds as a result of being fired upon by two responding officers as they converged on him during a pursuit in St. Paul, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Stowers pointed a firearm at officers, prompting them to shoot and kill the fugitive, who was pronounced dead at the hospital, said authorities.

Police were hunting for him in connection with the deadly shooting at the apartment of his estranged wife, 35-year-old Damara Alexis Kirkland, who was two months pregnant. It's unclear if she was expecting Stowers' child.

Stowers was paroled in March after serving time for a second-degree murder conviction, the Lawyer Herald previously reported.

Although he had been living in a halfway house at the time, he was granted permission to visit his ex-wife, who he had filed for divorce from in June.

At the time of Kirkland's murder, their divorce had not been finalized, the Associated Press reported, citing court records.

Stowers was facing two charges of second-degree murder before he was killed.
