An 18-year-old Milwaukee man is facing severe charges after allegedly throwing an 8-month-old baby against a wall with such force that a prosecutor said she heard the "bang" during a court hearing on Saturday.
Jalin White, who was charged with felony child abuse and neglect, appeared in court Saturday as Milwaukee prosecutors detailed the alleged assault, according to WISN12.
Assistant District Attorney Madeline Witte described the incident as "a severe level of violence for an innocent, infant child." Authorities say the baby suffered life-threatening injuries from the incident, which occurred Tuesday on Milwaukee's north side near 42nd Street and Good Hope Road, where court records indicate White lives.
Police say medical staff do not expect the baby to survive, with officials suggesting the baby had been subjected to repeated abuse prior to Tuesday's incident, WISN12 also revealed.
"Which have multiple injuries indicating that the victim had been abused multiple ways over a period of time," Witte added, noting evidence of past injuries.
"Your statement (was) he hit the wall hard. You heard the bang of the wall," Court Commissioner Andrea Bolender said, addressing White's statement during the court session.
White reportedly confessed to throwing the infant, though they have not disclosed what may have provoked the act, according to authorities.
Investigators have not confirmed White's relationship to the child, though he displayed visible emotion in court, occasionally shaking his head and wiping his eyes.
If convicted on current charges, White could face up to 62-and-a-half years in prison; however, should the child succumb to injuries, the charges and potential sentencing may escalate.
