Hungarian authorities have arrested a man accused of killing an American tourist, who allegedly made disturbing internet searches before her body was found following her disappearance.
Mackenzie "Kenzie" Michalski, 31, a former nurse practitioner from Portland, Oregon, was vacationing with friends in Europe and had decided to stay in Budapest for a few extra days after her group departed, ABC 7 NY reported.
Michalski's friends reported her missing on Nov. 4 when she failed to check out of her Airbnb and missed a return flight. She was last seen at a nightclub. On Nov. 8, Hungarian authorities discovered her body.
Local authorities launched an investigation and identified a 37-year-old Irish man as the main suspect. Soon after, police revealed that Michalski and the suspect reportedly met in the nightclub and continued their evening together before going to his rented apartment, where she was allegedly killed.
After the murder, the suspect reportedly tried to conceal the crime, cleaning the apartment and hiding Michalski's body in a suitcase before driving it out of the city to a wooded area near Lake Balaton.
Authorities allegedly discovered internet searches made by the suspect about corpse disposal, ABC 7 NY reported. The searches included, "Do pigs really eat dead bodies?" and "Texas woman killed by a wild boar."
The unnamed suspect, now in police custody, allegedly confessed to the crime and showed authorities the location where Michalski's body was hidden.
The U.S. Embassy and Hungarian authorities are working together to address legal proceedings and offer support to Michalski's family and friends. The investigation is still ongoing.
