A New Jersey woman has been handed additional charges after officials alleged that she lied about having a child with cancer in order to delay a case accusing her of stealing thousands of dollars from an elderly community.
Prosecutors allege that Alicia Campbell, 37, had been forging documents claiming to be from medical officials about her child's cancer and treatment, as reported by Asbury Park Press.
Campbell had her case adjourned once in April, claiming that her child was receiving treatment for leukemia in Philadelphia, before telling the court over the summer that her child was being moved to a Texas hospital for treatment.
After asking to have her case adjourned once again in August, staff with the prosecutor's office decided to investigate, where they said detectives found that "the hospital had never even met Campbell, nor did it provide any care for Campbell's child,'' according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
Campbell was initially charged with theft, financial facilitation and forgery on Jan. 3 after allegedly stealing more than $175,000 from a gated senior living community where she worked, as reported by Patch.
First Assistant Prosecutor Michael T. Nolan Jr. alleged that Campbell used more than $81,000 of the association's funds for herself, and Venmoed more than $95,000 from the association's account, only to have it deposited in her own account.
Following the news of the alleged hospital document forgery, Campbell was arrested from her home. She was charged with tampering with public records or information, impersonation, forgery, obstruction of justice and making an unsworn false statement to authorities and booked into Ocean County Jail.
