A 9-month-old baby's overdose on fentanyl is believed to have been caused by a bag of drugs a visitor accidentally dropped on the floor of the apartment, police said.

Police traced the drugs back to a 30-year-old man from Proctorsville, Vermont, who they said was visiting his son — who was not the victim — when he reportedly accidentally dropped the bag of drugs, as reported by WMUR.

First responders received a 911 call about the baby's overdose on Sept. 19 in Charlestown, New Hampshire. Police were able to find the family on their way to the hospital, and administered Narcan, as reported by the Boston Globe.

"Once they are able to administer [Narcan], they were able to successfully block the opioid and the child was able to begin breathing normally," Chris Stawasz with the American Medical Response told WMUR. "Their tolerance to the amount of fentanyl that it would take to put them into respiratory arrest is much lower than what yours or mine would be. A very, very small amount could be lethal to them."

The 9-month-old was taken to the hospital before being flown to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. The baby was able to recover from the incident.

Police have not formally charged or arrested the Vermont man. The case was sent to the Sullivan County Attorney's Office to await presentation to a grand jury.
