Neutrality policy tests Argentina-born Dutch queen ahead of World Cup semifinals match

By

Another public figure is put on the spotlight regarding her allegiance ahead of the highly-anticipated match between Argentina and the Netherlands in Sao Paulo on Wednesday. Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, who was born in Argentina, will be observed no doubt by fans from both sides as to whom she would be cheering for should she and the Dutch royal family will be attending the match at the Arena Corinthians, the New York Post said.

While Queen Maxima has yet to be spotted attending any of Argentina's matches in the World Cup, she was seen wearing Holland's colors while singing the Dutch national anthem at the top of her lungs in the Netherland's first round match. On the other hand, it did not stop fans from poking fun in the so-called "Máxima Dilemma," with memes of her and her blue-blooded hubby, King Willem-Alexander, in several potential scenarios should she decide to side with the land she had called her birthplace.

As an Argentinian puts it to the Post, "If it's true that Máxima will be rooting for Holland, she will have a hard time walking the streets of Buenos Aires again without being booed."

Manhattanite and Argentine Sergio Stabio also told the paper, "Should Argentina win, will that drive a wedge between her and King Charming?"

Queen Maxima might have made the right move to become quiet after the Netherlands had advanced from the first round in the stages. When she made a statement meant to silence her critics regarding the match between Holland and Argentina at the 2006 World Cup, she was still branded as a traitor.

"I'm interested in Argentina, but my nationality is Dutch," she then said.

The Dutch queen had made an unexpected visit to the Holland's dressing room following their victory back then.

On the other hand, there is speculation that at least, she and her hubby will have a healthy competition at the confinements of their home.

Director Loura Zijdel- Eelkema of NYC-area Dutch language school 't Klokhuis said, "I think she's very entitled to support Argentina in the privacy of her house. But she is the Dutch queen, so, in front of everyone, she has to be in favor of Holland."

Stabio also added, "In her mind at least, she will be hiding in her boudoir, clenching a hot cup of maté tea in one hand and a chicken empanada in the other, screaming, ‘Vamos, vamos, Argentina!'"
