An Arkansas mom has raised thousands of dollars for the defense fund of her husband, who is accused of shooting and killing the man who allegedly raped their daughter.
Heather Spencer took to Facebook Monday to thank the hundreds of people who donated to help support her husband's legal fees after he was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
"It's truly unbelievable the amount of support we have received, not just locally, but from strangers all over the world. If there has been any light in this, it has been the public response and outpouring of charity. It seems we all still agree that children deserve our protection," Spencer wrote on Facebook. "In less than a week we have raised over $100,000! We have been able to secure legal counsel and are hopeful that we will be able to fight this charge."
The teen was initially reported missing just after 1:10 a.m. Oct. 8. As officers were on their way to the residence, they received a report that the teen's father, Aaron Spencer, had located her in a vehicle with Michael Fosler, the Lonoke County Sheriff's Office said.
The two men got into a confrontation, which ended in a shooting that left Fosler dead. Aaron Spencer was charged with first-degree murder.
Lonoke County Sheriff John Staley told USA Today that the girl was 14, and Fosler was in his 60s. Fosler had previously been arrested in July and charged with internet stalking of a child and sexual assault, but had been released on bond.
Heather Spencer wrote in a previous post to Facebook, "This man had a no contact order for stalking/[raping] our child. We absolutely called 911 during the entire event. We had no idea this man was in contact with our child again. He was [awaiting] 6-9 felonies for what he did, not 2. He was looking at the rest of his pathetic life in jail, and our daughter was the only witness. We 100% in the moment thought he had taken her to kill her."
While Heather Spencer wrote that she was upset by how the situation was handled, Staley told USA Today, "I absolutely do not support predators. I'm a daddy. I have three daughters. I know she's hurt right now, but there's absolutely nobody I would put ahead of our children, their children, my children."
