Iowa Brothers Killed Their Father Before Dumping Body: Prosecutors
Alec and Nathan Jones Fort Dodge Police Department

One of two Iowa brothers accused of shooting their father to death before dumping his body in a ditch will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Alec Jones, 26, was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of his dad, 55-year-old Dennis Jones, at the family's Fort Dodge, Iowa home, according to KCCI-TV.

He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole Tuesday.

Jones was driven to shoot his father due to the ongoing abuse he inflicted on the suspect's mother, prosecutors said during his trial earlier this year, according to The Daily Freeman Journal.

Dennis was arguing with his wife in April when he smacked her in the face, prosecutors said. In that moment, Jones admitted he decided he was going to kill his father. Hours later, he fired off three rounds into Dennis, and Jones' 21-year-old brother, Nathan Jones, allegedly helped him get rid of the body.

During police questioning, Jones said his parents often argued and there was habitual drug use in their house.

Dennis' body was found in a ditch by a mailman the afternoon after the murder, said prosecutors.

Nathan will be tried at a later date on a charge of aiding and abetting in first-degree murder.
