A disturbing tip led Indiana police to a grisly discovery in a Wheatfield fire pit, where the remains of two children, allegedly killed by their father, may have been hidden for years.
On September 20, a tipster alerted authorities in Jasper County of a man who reportedly admitted to killing his two children and disposing of their bodies in a backyard fire pit in his Wheatfield, Indiana, home.
Jason Wallace, Chief Deputy at the sheriff's office, confirmed to PEOPLE that the suspect is the father of the two deceased children, but he has not been arrested in connection with the case.
Wallace stated that the father allegedly confessed to acquaintances that he had killed two of his undocumented children; however, the undocumented status is not linked to immigration but rather due to the fact there are no records of them in the state system.
Both children are assumed to be between the ages of 0 and 6.
The ominous tip immediately prompted an investigation, and the parents of the children were soon found at a nearby hotel and interrogated by officers.
"They were cooperative but had nothing to share on the topic; they just denied it," Wallace claimed.
Following the discovery of new evidence after the sheriff's office confiscated their cell phones, police contacted the parents again, who continued to deny having any knowledge of the incident.
Another undocumented child was allegedly removed from the couple's care during the investigation.
On Monday, officials executed a search warrant at the Wheatfield residence where Wallace says the couple had previously lived.
The couple are not currently living in the home and are known to be "moving around."
Cadaver dogs directed police to three separate locations on the property where partial bone fragments were recovered.
The bones are currently undergoing forensic analysis to determine if they belonged to an infant or an animal.
