Texas Man 'Calmly' Lit Joint, Drank Soda After Shooting Grandparents

A Texas man greeted police with unsettling composure—lighting a joint and sipping a soda—moments after allegedly gunning down his grandparents in their home, authorities said.

Law enforcement arrived at the residence to find Chevy Kyler Monaghan exiting the garage.

"Monaghan was nonchalant with officers," police wrote in their statement.

"He calmly sat down, lit a marijuana cigarette, and opened a soda can. As the officers inquired about the whereabouts of Monaghan's grandparents, he acknowledged they were inside the residence but did not say anything about them being deceased."

Monaghan, 21, told officers his grandfather had kicked him out; however, as they made their way inside the home, they found the couple dead from apparent gunshot wounds in a hallway.

Shari Mallory-Maxa had been shot three times, and Anthony Maxa was shot six times.

Investigators said it appeared as though the suspect had stood over them at a steep downward angle and shot them.

The grandparents bedroom had allegedly been ransacked as well.

In Monaghan's bedroom, officers found a.380 caliber handgun and several rounds of ammo, and in his vehicle, several bags containing jewelry, blank checks belonging to the victims, and additional small caliber ammunition.

Monaghan reportedly told a family member that the couple were inside the home and engaged in a heated feud.

Family members had attempted to get in touch with the victims, Shari Mallory-Maxa, 74, and Anthony Maxa, 76; however, they were unable to reach them, according to a press statement.

"They got into a big fight," the defendant allegedly said.

"They're in their room stewing mad at each other; you don't want to see it."

Relatives grew concerned and phoned law enforcement twice requesting a welfare check on the couple as Monaghan refused to let them inside the home, according to KXAN.

Furthermore, a family member told officers Monaghan was reportedly acting unstable and had owned a gun in the past.

Monaghan is charged with capital murder and is currently being held in the Travis County Jail.
