The Phoenix City Council has agreed to pay up to $800,000 to the family of a man who died while in police custody after he refused to leave a party.

Akeem Terrell was arrested after declining police orders to leave a New Year's Day party in 2021.

While in custody, Phoenix police officers and Maricopa County Sheriff's officers applied physical pressure on Terrell as he lay on the ground of a jail cell, which resulted in his death.

Terrell had reportedly stopped moving while being held under force, according to 12NEWS.

Officers left him motionless and face down on the floor and waited a whole six minutes before requesting medical help after finding he had no pulse.

Terrell's family filed a lawsuit on his behalf and accused the officers of using unnecessary force and ignoring the need to call help while Terrell was experiencing medical distress.

The city has agreed to pay up to $800,000 to settle his death.
