Doctors find 12 year-old "Slender Man" suspect incompetent to stand trial

By

According to attorney Anthony Cotton on Tuesday, his client, 12 year-old Morgan Geyser, has been found by doctors to be mentally-incompetent to stand trial in the stabbing of her classmate. Geyser and Anissa Weier, who is also 12, has been accused of stabbing their classmate 19 times as "proxies" of the eerie Internet meme "Slender Man," Buzzfeed said

The meme became international headlines when it was associated to Geyser and Weier, who had attacked their classmate who was staying with them over for a sleepover and was later lured into the woods to stab her. It has been known that the duo had confided to detectives that they have done the horrendous crime in order to appease the fictional Internet character.

On Wednesday, both girls appeared on court where Geyser's mental condition was announced. Geyser was reportedly braiding her hair and appeared emotionless during the hearing, Daily Mail recounted.

The hearing also saw the granting of the defense's request to test Geyser for mental defect or disease, which could lead to a potential insanity plea for the underaged suspect. A hearing about Geyser's mental competency has been set on August 1st.

The British tabloid noted that under Wisconsin law, where the girls are attempted to be tried, attempted homicide cases are required to start in court if a suspect is at least 10 years of age. The defense, however, expressed that the girls will be tried in a juvenile court, where services for minors would be available.

Geyser's and Weier's parents were present in the trial on Wednesday. Geyser's father appeared to be emotional all throughout the hearing, crying most of the time during the legal proceeding and at one point had his head hunched over his hands. Weier's dad remained stoic in the proceedings.

The victim had recently expressed her gratitude to supporters online. A photo of her was published online with her face out of sight and her holding a heart-shaped card that read "thanks" surrounded by mails of encouragement from supporters all over the globe.
