Ann Coulter credits US fascination to World Cup to immigration

If there's one person who is not rooting for the US Men's National Team at this year's World Cup, it would be Ann Coulter. In her latest column for The Clarion-Ledger, the political commentator and writer said that the enthusiastic response of the Americans to the tournament is a "sign of the nation's moral decay."

"Any growing interest in soccer can only be a sign of the nation's moral decay," she wrote.

The Independent said that Coulter's column followed after USMNT had lost their final Group of Death match against Germany at 1-0. However, Portugal's win over Ghana, which happened simultaneously in a different venue, helped the Americans advance to a coveted spot of the Round of 16 alongside the Germans.

As the US Soccer encouraged the US to watch their crucial match to support the team, and even tweeted what appeared to be an official letter of excuse from work or break signed by team coach Jurgen Klinsmann, Coulter went into political territory and wrote down nine points lambasting the sports itself.

Some of the points she used are that "Liberal moms like soccer," "It's foreign," and "Soccer is like the metric system, which liberals also adore because it's European."

Coulter also touched on the topic of immigration, which is currently the hot topic lawmakers apparently would not touch as a two-year push by activists and proponents would be coming to a dead end as the measure has been killed in the Congress.

She added, "If more "Americans" are watching soccer today, it's only because of the demographic switch effected by Teddy Kennedy's 1965 immigration law. I promise you: No American whose great-grandfather was born here is watching soccer. One can only hope that, in addition to learning English, these new Americans will drop their soccer fetish with time."

Daily Mail said Coulter is known for her outspoken and sometimes provocative comments. In the wake of the Boko Haram kidnapping of school children in Nigeria, Coulter edited out a portion of the popular activist hashtag #BringBackOurGirls and tweeted a photo of herself holding a paper written with her own hashtag #BringBackOurCountry. She was immediately lampooned on the Internet for her somewhat crass act and created memes of her holding messages like, "I'm a miserable person who peddles hate to make money off dumb republicans" and "#BRING BACK MY SOUL".
