Along with its announcement of referee assignments to the upcoming matches at this year's World Cup, FIFA said that it has dropped the Colombian lineman who had made the offside decisions that denied Mexico of two potential goals during a controversial match against Cameroon. The Associated Press said Humberto Clavijo will no longer join lead referee Wilmar Roldan and his team to referee the upcoming game between South Korea and Algeria in Porte Alegre, which is slated on Sunday.
Christian Lescano of Ecuador will be filling in Clavijo's spot in Roldan's team, according to the website of the world soccer body.
FIFA did not offer any explanation on its website on whether they or Clavijo had pulled out from the match, or whether Clavijo will be expected to assist in future games.
In the match between Mexico and Cameroon on Friday, fans and even Mexico coach Miguel Herrera were not happy with the decision of Roldan's team when they ruled out what appeared to be two legitimate goals both made by Giovani dos Santos during the first half of the game. Herrera was obviously pissed with the referees, who went toward in his tracksuit in the rain bellowing in anger, Daily Mail said.
Herrera, who was pleased with the victory nonetheless thanks to its hero of the hour Oribe Peralta, did not fail to express his dislike about the refereeing during the match, He said, "We scored two clear goals in the first half - frankly the refereeing took them away. There was only one team controlling the ball. We could have scored more but we go into the next match with three points and very high spirits. The boys gave their souls on the pitch."
Roldan's crew will again be subject to intense scrutiny on Sunday, most probably by both team coaches of South Korea and Algeria that could be dubious and costly for their own teams.
