A beautiful Dutch actress is Colombians' subject of outrage due to her latest tweet ahead of the match of the country's national team, Buzzfeed said. Colombia played against Ivory Coast and won 2-1 in Brasilia, Daily Mail said.
The night of Colombia's match, Nicolette Van Dam, who is also a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, tweeted an Internet meme that shows a referee spraying foam on the field. The meme also features Colombian players Falcao Garcia and James Rodriguez on their knees. snorting the spray that the referees at the tournament have been using to draw lines for free kicks just line a cocaine line. The meme was accompanied by a caption written in Dutch, which translated to "The Colombian wall."
Many who have spotted van Dam's tweet cried foul over the meme, questioning her role as a ambassador for an organization that champions policies of equality, among other things. The others commented how the tweet was hurtful and disrespectful to Colombians.
Her original tweet has since been deleted. But Fusion said that people are still not happy with it.
Twitter user Juliana Londoño wrote, "Colombians deserve more respect, that little joke cannot stand as it is. It's a shame!"
The football news blog said that UNICEF is currently looking into the matter, although it is unclear on what would happen to Van Dam being a representative of the global organization.
A tweet from the official account of UNICEF Colombia, which is in Colombian, read, "(We are) trying to verify the authorship of the unfortunate tweet from @NicoletteVanDam as soon as possible."
Van Dam had issued an apology for her Twitter post on the same night and said, "Queridos Colombianos, there was no offense intended from my side. Please accept my honest and sincere apologies. #RespectColombia"
According to her IMDb profile, Van Dam's claim to international fame would be her role in the Rob Schneider 2005 film "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo." She also received a Golden Calf nomination, which is a coveted award at the Netherlands Film Festival, for Best Actress for her role in a 2006 film titled "Zoop in India."
