The Mirror UK reported that supermarket chain Morrisons has accommodated Scottish customers' purported requests to ban playing England World Cup songs in its local calls. According to the report, irate customers have called out the supermarket chain's playing of the songs and accused Morrisons of "rubbing it in."
The issue about the World Cup songs played in Morrisons' stores stemmed from Scotland unable to make it in the qualifying rounds to play at this year's World Cup tournament. England is currently playing in Brazil after making it through qualifying rounds.
The songs Scottish customers are requesting Morrisons to not play in local stores include "Three Lions" by comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel and "Vindaloo" by comic and actor Keith Allen. Songs about the previous World Cup, like New Order's "World In Motion," which was the official song of the British nation for the 1990 tournament, were apparently banned as well.
25 year-old Carfin, Lanarkshire native Christopher Vale told the Daily Record, "I couldn't believe it. I thought I'd taken a wrong turn and ended up in the middle of England. It's just rubbing in the fact England are playing in Brazil and Scotland didn't qualify."
Hamish Husband of the Association of Tartan Army Clubs said, "Playing England's songs in Morrisons is taking it a bit far."
The Bradford-based company, who has been playing some of the songs that were subject of complaints by its Scottish customers had claimed that the songs were accidentally added to the playlist as they were intended to be played in their English stores.
Morrisons said in a statement, "As soon as we noticed the error, the songs were removed from the Scottish stores."
Meanwhile, England is set to face Uruguay on Friday, June 20, at the Arena Corinthians in São Paulo. According to the Telegraph, striker Wayne Rooney might be given a chance to play for his team against Uruguay given the fact that the player allegedly had a closed training session in the Number 10 role or alongside Daniel Sturridge in the team's Urca base.
