Lawyers file request for retrial on 2007 OJ Simpson robbery case

By

On Thursday, court officials have said that the lawyers for OJ Simpson had filed a request for a new trial in the hopes of overturning the 2008 armed-robbery conviction of the once-celebrated football star. Simpson is currently not eligible for parole until 2017, Reuters noted.

The request, said Nevada Supreme Court spokesman Michael Sommermeyer, was filed as part of his December 2013 appeal ahead of a midnight Wednesday deadline. The document was in a staggering 19,993-word brief, which was well over the 14,000 word limit. It also came in with a request to exceed with the word count limit and attributed the act due to the complexity of Simpson's case. Sommermeyer noted that prior to the public release of the brief, the court will have to accept the ex-National Football League star's request to go over the word count limit.

The 66 year-old was convicted in that year on burglary, robbery, kidnapping and assault while in possession of a deadly weapon charges in relation to a robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas hotel that happened a year earlier. At that time, Simpson testified that he was trying to get the items back that he believed that were stolen from him. The district court then handed Simpson a 33-year sentence and is currently detained at the Lovelock Correctional Center since, Reuters reported.

In May last year, the former athlete had requested a new trial under the argument that was inadequately represented. District Court judge Linda Bell denied his retrial request, which led to Simpson putting forward his request to the Nevada Supreme Court in December.

Prior to his incarceration, Simpson made headlines when he was acquitted in 1995 of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles. However, the families of the victims somewhat received a little relief when Simpson lost a wrongful death case that was brought by them.
