Police arrests singer Paul Simon, wife on disorderly conduct charges

Police have said on Monday that they have arrested singer-songwriter Paul Simon and his wife Edie Brickell at their home in New Canaan, Connecticut over the weekend. The couple made an appearance in court on Monday and Simon told the judge that they were arrested due to a rare argument, the Guardian reported.

The Associated Press noted that the two showed signs of unity when they appeared holding hands and requested that they do not see a need for protective order nor they feel threatened by each other. The two sired three children together and had been married since 1992, the Guardian said. The judge instructed the couple to return for a May 16 appearance.

According to police, officers responded on Saturday at 8:20PM to investigate a family dispute report. Police chief Leon Krolikowski said at a news conference that the two were given a misdemeanor summons and one of them agreed to vacate the premises.

Krolikowski, noting the tense situation when police responded to the Simons' dispute, said, "There was aggressiveness on both sides. They're both victims and they have children involved and we're trying to be very cautious of that."

Both Simon and Brickell are singers, but Simon had the more illustrious career. A 12-time Grammy winner, his five-decade career had people know him as one-half of the popular American music duo Simon & Garfunkel. His group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1982, but managed to get in as a solo artist in 2001. Brickell, on the other hand, performed lead singing duties for the semi-eponymous folk-rock band Edie Brickell & New Bohemians.

The Guardian said Brickell is Simon's third wife. Prior to Brickell, Simon first married and divorce Peggy Harper, whom he had a son. Simon also briefly married actress Carrie Fisher but managed to carry on with a relationship with her for around a decade after divorcing her a year after they got married.
