Police in Florida are clearing up "misinformation" that a pair of shorts found in the vicinity of the body of a dead jogger belonged to the victim.

The remains of 21-year-old Arielle Valdes were found along the Caloosahatchee River in North Fort Myers, Florida, Monday, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Arielle was last seen leaving her Fort Myers, Florida, residence last Wednesday.

Law enforcement and volunteers collaborated on the massive, nearly weeklong search effort, including local Christi Thornton who claimed she found Arielle's shorts.

"The X marks where I found a pair of running shorts with Arielle's missing flyer neatly folded underneath them. There are also tire tracks that go up onto the sidewalk into the dirt right next to where I found the shorts," Thornton captioned a Facebook photo of a map of where Arielle's body was found.

However, authorities shot down Thornton's claims as "misinformation," in a statement to the Lawyer Herald.

"Our hearts remain with Arielle's family and loved ones as they navigate the coming days during this time of grief," the LCSO stated, clarifying there was no evidence of foul play.

Family members said Arielle was an avid runner and was training for a marathon, but it was unclear if that was the reason she left her home – without her phone or Apple Watch – at the time of her disappearance.

Her cause of death remains under investigation.
