A 23-year-old man from Loves Park, Illinois, has been charged in connection with the death of a 21-year-old college gymnast from Wisconsin who was originally from Plainfield, according to Whitewater police.

Chad T. Richards has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by the use of a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct while armed in the death of Kara Welsh, Whitewater Wisconsin police said.

Richards is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday at the Walworth County Courthouse, the police department revealed.

Welsh, a 21-year-old college senior of Plainfield, Illinois, was allegedly shot to death Friday in her off-campus apartment in Whitewater, Wisconsin, according to authorities.

Responding officers found Kara, a national title-winning athlete, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Authorities have not yet elaborated on details, given that it is an ongoing investigation.
