A 71-year-old man in Indiana admitted to poisoning his wife's soda for months in 2021 so that he could marry her daughter after she died.

Alfred Ruf was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to aggravated battery posing a risk of death for the 2021 poisonings that landed his wife in the hospital on more than one occasion, according to PEOPLE.

51-year-old Lisa Bishop suddenly began experiencing "unexplained headaches, drowsiness, diarrhea, and more" as a result of the poisoning, reported the Kansas City Star.

Bishop tested positive for several drugs, including MDMA and cocaine, both of which she does not use.

Ruf initially admitted to his wife that he had been poisoning her soft drinks. Bishop then reported her husband to authorities after finding a powdery substance in her Coca-Cola.

Upon interview, Ruf did confess to police that he was attempting to kill his wife so that he could marry her daughter.

He also revealed to authorities that two other women were involved in the plan, including Bishop's 31-year-old daughter, whom he was having sexual relations with.

The daughter allegedly provided Ruf with the poison, and he says she concocted the entire plan to kill her mother.

Rus will serve four years in prison, followed by five years of probation.

It's unclear whether the daughter will face any charges.
