Abnerd Joseph, a former assistant principal in Atlanta, was gunned down nearly a year ago in Chicago, and now his brother is demanding the alleged shooter be held accountable.
"I didn't think it would take this long," Jay Charles, Joseph's brother, said to WSB-TV.
"With so much evidence presented, I don't see why the investigation is still ongoing."
Joseph, 32, was shot multiple times and killed after an argument with a 45-year-old man in his Chicago high-rise apartment building, The Legacy of Millennium Park, on the evening of September 14, 2023.
His family is desperate for answers and remains frustrated as no arrests have been made.
In January, family members told Channel 2's Candace McCowan that the suspect, Joseph's neighbor, was briefly taken into custody but was released and has not been charged.
The family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in May 2024, naming the building's owners, management, and security, as well as the tenant who shot and killed Joseph.
The original police report states that the shooter holds a valid concealed carry license.
ABC7 Chicago reported Joseph was, according to law enforcement, behaving erratically, knocking on neighbors doors, and causing a disturbance.
Joseph's family is stressing that the Cook County State's Attorney's Office file criminal charges against the shooter.
Police continue to classify the case as an open investigation.
The 32-year-old was an assistant principal at KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools before moving to Chicago and becoming the assistant principal of culture at Intrinsic High School.
"He had a plan to start a school. It was going to be called the E3 movement," Charles said.
