In a harrowing case of alleged neglect and abuse, an elderly South Carolina woman was discovered with maggot-infested bed sores, soaked in her own urine and feces, as well as an untreated broken hip, leading to her death and the subsequent arrest of her son on murder charges, based on an affidavit from the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

Consuelo Gonzalez' son, Salvador Gonzales Rivera, was put into custody Tuesday after a welfare check was conducted at the house where his mom was found lying in her bed, soaked with her own urine and feces.

Rivera was first charged with "exploitation of a vulnerable adult", but that charge has since been changed to the more serious charge of murder. Currently, he is incarcerated at Al Cannon Detention Center.

His mother, 88, died Wednesday as she was receiving treatment at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, accoridng to Counton News.

The woman was transported to the local hospital where a doctor found her to be emaciated and suffering from bedsores on both legs, which were infested with maggots, according to the affidavit.

They also determined that she had a broken leg which had likely been neglected and left untreated as well for an extended period of time.
