Orlando Commissioner Regina Hill Arrested, Accused of Misusing 96-Year-Old's Savings on Facelift, New Home

By

Orlando City Commissioner Regina Hill is in the throes of a serious legal battle after the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) arrested her. At 58, Hill is charged on multiple counts, including three for exploitation of the elderly, two for fraudulent use of personal identification, one for mortgage fraud, and one for scheming to defraud an amount over $50,000. These accusations arise from events leading back to March 15, 2021.

Financial Exploits Uncovered by Authorities

The investigation into Commissioner Hill's conduct stemmed from an FDLE agent's affidavit on March 7. Detailed within are the allegations of financial exploitation initiated more than three years prior. Hill, as per the agent's document, allegedly began diverting assets from the nonagenarian, who was found in substandard living conditions. Hill utilized her position to gain control over the victim's financial affairs shortly after their encounter.

How Could Hill Allegedly Commit Such Acts?

The FDLE reported on March 28 that the probe into Hill's activities followed a complaint referred by the Attorney General's office. The victims' dire living situation brought Hill into contact with her, which resulted in Hill gaining power of attorney. This authority was misused to ascertain a second power of attorney, which involved purchasing a home worth over $400,000 with the elderly woman as a co-signer, all reportedly unbeknownst to her.

Spending Spree with Victim's Funds

Further investigations revealed Hill's occupancy in another property belonging to the elderly woman. Hill allegedly siphoned approximately $15,400 for renovations on this property. Hill is also accused of having accessed the elderly woman's funds, amassing over $100,000 to finance a lifestyle that included cosmetic surgeries, luxury apparel, and hotel stays.

What Could Be Next for Regina Hill?

With news of the indictment, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis spoke to local media, indicating potential suspension from Hill's municipal role as Orlando City Commissioner. This step aligns with the typical response when an elected municipal official faces a grand jury indictment. However, Hill's current status remains unconfirmed concerning any suspension or actions taken.

Officials Accused of Misconduct Face Scrutiny

Amidst these allegations, FDLE Orlando Special Agent in Charge John Vecchio reiterated the importance of public trust in leaders. The arrest and potential charges reflect a commitment to upholding this trust and safeguarding the community against exploitation.

Regina Hill's Post-Arrest Response

Post-arrest, Regina Hill managed to pay a $40,000 bond for her release. The weight of the charges could lead to a significant prison term if Hill is found guilty, with the total sentence reaching up to 180 years. Despite the circumstances, Hill has publicly claimed her innocence, expressing her disbelief and resolve to fight the claims against her. She vocalized her trust in the legal process and awaited the chance to defend herself in court.

Commissioner's Decade of Service Under Scrutiny

Reflecting on her track record, Hill professed her deep connection to the community she served for a decade, highlighting her dedication and love for the people of Orlando and her family. These allegations stand in stark contrast with the serious allegations she now faces. As the legal proceedings unfold, the community, leadership, and law enforcement keenly await further developments. Hill's case is an essential benchmark for ethics and accountability in public office.
