Justice Denies Trump's Bid to Personally Deliver Closing Arguments in NY Fraud Trial

By

Donald Trump has been denied the chance to deliver a closing argument in his civil fraud trial. A New York judge laid down the law on Wednesday, saying that the former U.S. president's attorneys hadn't agreed to conditions that would keep him from turning the trial into a campaign stage.

So, What's the Case All About?

This whole shebang is happening because New York's attorney general accuses Trump of inflating his net worth by a remarkable couple billion dollars to score better loan terms. Justice Arthur Engoron did give Trump the green light to have his say - but only if he played by the rules.

Those rules aren't too fancy; they're just the standard stuff. Trump can't badmouth the judge, his staff, the plaintiff, or the New York State Court System. You get the picture. The bottom line is don't turn it into a spectacle, Mr. Trump.

Did Trump Miss His Chance?

Trump's legal team didn't quite hit the mark. Even though they had three chances, they never agreed to Justice Engoron's terms before the deadline passed. New York Attorney General Letitia James is chasing nearly $370 million from Trump's companies and his adult sons, Donny Jr. and Eric.

Trump's Comeback Derailed?

Despite being found liable for fraud in September, Trump's still keen to take on President Joe Biden in the November 2024 election. He claims the trial messed with his campaign plans but didn't waste a chance to rally support when he could.

Trump denies any shady business went down, calling the whole case a political witch hunt. He even claimed that James and Engoron have a political bias. Meanwhile, the state's lawyers say Trump's been consistently overvaluing his assets, making him look richer than Richie Rich.

In his defense, Trump's lawyers say the property valuations were subjective and alleged inaccuracies didn't harm banks - they still made bank from the loans, after all.

Is There More Legal Heat Incoming?

Trump has a whopping four potential criminal trials lined up for this year. He's charged in Washington and Georgia for trying to overturn his 2020 election loss, in Florida for handling classified documents, and in New York for hush money paid to a pornstar. He's pleading not guilty in all these cases.
