Impeachment Fever Sweeps House Republicans
House Republicans are on the move with DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in their sights due to the US-Mexico border crisis.
Just this Wednesday, the impeachment arena was ablaze, citing the impact of Homeland Security's actions on the state. Impeaching a cabinet official is a rarity, no doubt. However, watch out for the border issue. It might grab headlines in the presidential election of 2024.
A more significant share of Americans now believes we have a full-blown crisis at the border. December saw unprecedented processing of migrants at the southern border, with nearly 2.5 million people apprehended for the year.
Is Secretary Mayorkas Failing His Duty?
The House Committee on Homeland Security is vocal about it. Mayorkas' non-enforcement of US border laws is called a "dereliction of duty." Mark Green, Committee Chairman, speared the attack. For him, impeachment isn't just about criminal behavior. It's also about "gross incompetence" that puts Americans at risk and breaches public trust.
However, the Democrats aren't going down without a fight. Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, called the impeachment a sham. He even accused Republicans of using it as a tactic to feed their base with "political red meat." The hearing was a hot pot, with testimony from Montana, Oklahoma, and Missouri attorneys general where Republican governors lead these states. They claim to have been impacted by Mayorkas' policies.
Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen pulled no punches. He said the Biden administration and Secretary Mayorkas have tossed a match onto the border crisis.

Increasing Tensions at the Border
GOP leader Mike Johnson led a band of Republicans to the border. They got a first-hand look at the chaos there. On the other hand, Mayorkas also made a trip a day before the hearing, putting the blame back on Congress and calling for a fix on immigration policies.
Frankly, he's angry at the accusation that he doesn't uphold US immigration laws. He calls it baseless and believes Republicans are playing politics instead of getting down to address the "broken immigration laws."
Now, Mayorkas isn't just sitting on his hands. He's hustling with the White House and a cross-party group of senators looking to tighten those laws. In exchange? Republicans want more aid from President Joe Biden for Ukraine and Israel.
Navigating Political Turbulence
Meanwhile, as Biden gears up for re-election, immigration issues loom large. A CBS News poll released this week revealed that America wants stricter border policies. 45% of those polled see the situation at the border as a crisis.
Several Democratic mayors are sounding the alarm with increased migrants pouring into their cities. Texas Governor Greg Abbott's policy of moving new arrivals out of his state adds to this influx. New York Mayor Eric Adams warned of a possible disaster for his city.
However, Democrats believe the Republican move to eliminate Mayorkas is politically self-serving. New York congressman Dan Goldman went so far as to call it an "embarrassment to the impeachment clause of the Constitution."
Prospects for Mayorkas
If the Republican-majority House does convict Mayorkas, the Democrat-dominated Senate would likely be his safety net. So, while a Senate conviction for Mayorkas is doubtful, an impeachment by the House would be historical. He'd be the first cabinet official in almost 150 years under that spotlight.
