Indiana University Launches Cybersecurity Master Of Science Degree

A Master of Science degree in cybersecurity risk management is launching in Indiana University this fall. The college stated that the major will focus on legal, ethical and policy cybersecurity issues faced by several industries.

According to Inside INdiana Business, the university will hire faculty to teach the degree's programs from Indiana University's Maurer School of Law, Kelley School of Business and School of Informatics and Computing. Chairing the degree program will be Scott Shackelford, Associate Professor of Business Law and Ethics.

In a statement, Shackelford said, "If you speak with policymakers and technical specialists about cybersecurity, they often speak about similar problems but use totally different languages." He also emphasized the need and importance to bring them together as a united front under risk management. The "confusion" he added will continue being a challenge, otherwise.

The delivery of the degree will be in a hybrid online format. Regarding this, Fred Cate, the Indiana University's Vice President for Research spoke up and said that it is tailored to cater to the "frequent demand" from employers who seek "graduates with broad, practical training in cybersecurity."

As reported by the IU Newsroom, in-residence weeks in the IU Bloomington campus as well as in Washington DC are included in the program. The students taking up the major will hence be able to hear directly from cybersecurity professionals from federal agencies and companies.

In order to enable students to become more familiar with the National Institute for Standards and Technology Cybersecurity Framework, the program will also encapsulate the immersive capstone consulting experience. From the best practices that are increasingly influencing decision-making, this is also an important baseline.

The program is a 30-credit hour one and according to the school, it is aimed and designed for mid-career professionals as well as recent graduates. For international students who are interested the deadline is 1 Apr. whereas the deadline for US students ends farther down the line, ending at 15 May.
