For the first time in the history of the Royal Family of Spain, Princess Cristina is the first member of the Royals tried for a crime in court. Princess Cristina is the daughter of King Juan Carlos I. After ruling for 29 years; he abdicated his throne at the age of 72 years old on June 19, 2014. Don Felipe ascended the throne at age 46.
After the trial that lasted for a year, the verdict is now out. Princess Cristina is clear from the crime of tax fraud and evasion. She paid €265,000 or $282,000 for financially gaining from these scrupulous transactions from her husband's illegal means. She is now free from any criminal charges.
The year-long trial consisted of high profile politicians, banking conglomerates, corrupted by the greed of money. There were 18 personalities on trial for the illegal transactions that went through. The felons' charges ranged from Tax Evasion, Tax Fraud, and money laundering to influence trafficking, as reported by Reuters.
An eight-year prison term could have been Princess Cristina's verdict if she was guilty of the charges. Instead of her going to jail, it was her husband that was hit by the anomalies. Mr. Iῆaki Urdangarin got the brunt of the judges as he got six years and three months for the crime committed. He was using his influence for netting the organization of sporting events and contracts, pocketing the proceeds at the cost of his luxurious way of living, as reported by The Guardian.
Princess Cristina's husband, with his business partner Seῆor Diego Torres, are in hot water for misappropriating funds of about €6 million or $6.4 million, distributing it to regional sports organizers. The investigation stemmed from the huge overpricing of a Cycling Track Stadium in Mallorca.
The former King Juan Carlos I assured Spaniards that justice is the same for all. Mr. Urdangarin is now cut off from the Royal Household. Princess Cristina is no longer the Duchess of Palma, but her succession rights are in place only demoted to 6th in line. Her public ties with King Felipe is unallowable, as reported by the Telegraph.
