Court documents obtained by RadarOnline showed that eight members of the Ramapo Mountain community are crying foul over the unfair depiction of some of the people portrayed in the 2013 film "Out of the Furnace." The drama starring Woody Harrelson and Christian Bale allegedly had put Ramapo Mountain people of New Jersey in a bad light, and that the protagonist of the movie, played by Harrelson was characterized as an awful person.
Award-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio and director Ridley Scott has been named as among of the defendants in the suit. DiCaprio is one of the producers of the movie, said News.com.au. The plaintiffs are claiming that the people behind the movie erroneously portrayed Ramapo Mountain people as drug-using inbreds.
"The movie and [a review] in the New York Post, places Plaintiffs and their family members in a false light. Each have had an extremely negative effect on the Plaintiff's community. It is extremely embarrassing to the Plaintiffs. Plaintiffs and their family members are harassed and discriminated against. The children are teased at school. The Plaintiffs are not the worst people, do not live in trailer homes, are not involved in an underground bare-knuckle fight ring, and do not live in a self-contained world of drugs and violence."
News.com.au said the conduct of the defendants in making the movie constituted defamation, false light and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Although the plaintiffs did not mention the amount that they seek in damages, they requested that a jury will decide on how much restitution they would receive should the latter find the defendants guilty of the alleged crimes.
News.com.au said that the case filed against DiCaprio's party was filed by the plaintiffs in early January in a New Jersey court. It has yet to be determined whether the case has been addressed by any one of the defendants, including DiCaprio.
