There is so much anticipation among smartphone users as three flagship phones will sport an OLED display.
As reported in Trusted Reviews, the Apple iPhone 8, Samsung Galaxy S8, and Google Pixel 2 will sport a state-of-the-art OLED panel. According to Dr. Raymond Soneira, President of DisplayMate, there is a shift towards OLED display. In contrast with traditional displays, OLED screens have pixels that emit their own light eliminating the need to have a backlight. As a result, the user can save more power as the battery does not have a backlight. Soneira, however, revealed in a short interview that while the three phones will have an OLED display, they will have distinct functions.
According to the website of Phone Arena, OLED displays is not new to Samsung since they have been using the technology with the S1, For Apple, on the other hand, the iPhne 8 will be Apple's first OLED smartphone. Apple has already perfected the LCD display and they pioneered in wide color displays with automatic support for the DCI-P3 gamut.
According to experts, the choice of OLED for the iPhone 8 can be strategic. It gives Apple the option to manufacture OLED on plastic instead of glass substrate allowing them to flex without breaking and maintain its image. OLED screens can stretch all the way to the edges. The Galaxy S8, on the other hand, will feature a curved OLED display, just like the Galaxy Note 7. The S8, likely to be launched by March or April will use the OLED screen. Another reason is because Samsung Display is the current leader for phone-sized OLED screens.
Finally, the Google Pixel 2, just like its predecessor, will also have an OLED display. Soneira reveals that Google is likely to keep its flat display since it will take a huge effort to apply the custom software and content of curved side screens.
