Apple Developing ARM Chip to Dedicate Performance for Mac’s Power Nap Mode

By

Apple is rumoured to be developing a new ARM chip for their MacBook Pro. The basics were introduced with T1 used on the Mac's Touch Bar. The purpose of the new ARM chip dubbed as T310 is to dedicate its performance for the Power Nap feature, separate from the function of the main Intel processor.

As reported by Bloomberg, the ARM chip on works will not be limited to the Touch Bar operation and Touch ID security authentication. Low-power functions of MacBooks will then be offloaded from Intel processors.

The Power Nap feature is used to allow the Mac to be kept updated while it sleeps. It will download updates and software upgrades in background, perform other basic functions, and will sync iCloud data while the computer screen is turned off. These activities can be done on low-power settings which an ARM chip can handle.

As mentioned by MacRumors, the Power Nap is currently being loaded into the normal process of Intel CPUs. However, it is believed that the next release of MacBook Pro will have a separate ARM chip to facilitate the Power Nap, Touch Bar, Touch Security, and possibly other new features that may come with the next update.

This new development for the MacBook Pro could be the answer against the criticisms that Apple lacks attention toward the laptop line of products. As noticed, the Cupertino-based tech firm have always focused on their iPhone line, while having little developments on the MacBook Pro and iPad series. Even Apple CEO Tim Cook received a series of blows against his management style because of these reactions.

Originally used for iPhones and iPads, the ARM chip is developed by Apple to ensure compatibility between the iOS and the hardware itself. This integration resulted into the smoothest performance possible for Apple devices. The new T310 for MacBook Pro is expected to be released later this year.
