Diego Luna is in talks as the new Tony Montana in the "Scarface" reboot. It is also reported that Antione Faqua is no longer to direct the film because of conflicts with his schedule.
According to a report in Vibe, a "Scarface" reboot is developed by Universal Pictures. The film is to focus on a Mexican immigrant in Los Angeles. However, Anione Faqua is not to direct the film since he is in contract to finish Denzel Washington's "The Equalizer."
"Scarface" was originally starred by Al Pacino in the 1980's. He is Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who turned into a drug lord in the film. The original film was written by Oliver Stone and directed by Brian De Palma.
A report in IGN indicates that Diego Luna who played the role of Cassian Andor in the film "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is to portray Tony Montana in the "Scarface" reboot. Although the film does not have a director because of Faqua's departure, Universal Pictures is actually looking for a new director to take care of the film. It is reported that Faqua has been interested to do "Scarface" yet is not able to do so.
In the meantime, the script for the "Scarface" reboot has been rewritten several times. It had the involvement of Paul Attanasio, David Ayer and Jonathan Herman. The latest script has been rewritten by Terence Winter from the Boardwalk Empire.
Meanwhile, Miami Herald reports that the reboot for "Scarface" will not be set in Miami. The film is to be set in Los Angeles. Sofia Vergara is also to join the film as Tony Montana's sister, Gina which was originally portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.
The 1983 film by Brian De Palma has been a reimagining of the film with the same title in 1932. It also has been based on the novel by Armitage Trail titled "Scarface" which was released in 1929. The book has been all about gangster wars.
