New York Woman May Skip Jail Time Amid Guilty Verdict On Animal Abuse For Hoarding Over 100 Rabbits

Brooklyn resident Dorota Trec was found guilty for recklessly breeding over a hundred rabbits around her home, but she might get away with it.


The 36-year-old woman kept about 125 "diseased and injury-ridden" rabbits in her Gowanus residence, reports NewYorkPost. Trec represented herself during the trial and insisted that she's not the one responsible for injuring the rabbits.

Trec blamed the officials who seized the rabbits. She claimed that the animals looked "beat-up" only at the time they were seized. Brooklyn Criminal Court Judge Curtis Farber was worried that Trec might be mentally ill.


Defending and justifying her own case


The rabbit hoarder responded by explaining that she's "not sick" and that she's a "very intelligent person." Trec claimed that she never intended to keep the bunnies as pets but rather, they were a part of a science project.

Trec was hoping to net millions for making a new breed of blue and pastel rabbits. However, the results were dozens of rabbits that contracted syphilis and various forms of diseases, reports NewYorkDailyNews.

Avoiding apparent jail time


The Brooklyn resident now owes the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) some money. The non-profit organization seized 90 rabbits from Trec's home.

As for the rabbit hoarder, the results of her psychiatric evaluation might be her ticket in avoiding jail time. Trec believes that the results is leading her away from prison, reports People.

While the 36-year-old believes she's not mentally sick, that angle might just be the one she needs if she wants to avoid the slammer. Regardless of the results, Trec will continue collecting and breeding rabbits.

"Who can stop me? They will have to put me in jail", Trec added. The rabbit hoarder is persistent in continuing her plans of creating the new breed of furry pastel bunnies. The results of Trec's psychiatric exam will not be released until Feb. 24.
