Enrique Peña Nieto, the Mexican President, canceled a meeting with US President Donald Trump that had been set for next week. The Mexican leader canceled the meeting because of Trump's plan to build a wall on the border.
Peña Nieto tweeted that he will not attend the meeting with Trump according to the Guardian. The US President tweeted that it would be better to avoid the meeting if Peña Nieto insisted that Mexico would not pay for the wall. The US President also dislikes NAFTA and believes this is not good for the US economy and jobs.
Mexico must treat the US fairly
"Unless Mexico will treat the United States fairly, with respect, such a meeting is fruitless, and I want to go a different route," the US President told House and Senate GOP lawmakers. Trump spoke about the cancellation and repeated one more time that US won't fund the wall according to CNN. He also made comments on the huge US trade deficit with Mexico.
Trump declared that he has no choice and that border security is a serious issue and a national problem. He also added that most illegal immigration comes from the Southern border.
Mexicans approved the decision of their President
Many Mexicans welcomed Peña Nieto's decision, but some believe that he had to do it long time ago. A professor at the Centre for Research and Teaching in Economics declared that the fact that Peña Nieto has not been able to turn Trump into a piñata for national unity is turning the Mexican President into that piñata.
Peña Nieto's perceived failure to stand up to the US President helped drive down his popularity ratings to a historic low of 12 per cent. The Mexican President appeared frozen in a situation where agreeing to pay for Trump's wall would provoke domestic outrage and not paying could create problems with Trump's team.
