‘Suicide Squad’ may have garnered mixed reviews from its audiences and was deemed to have performed less than expected. Still, the David Ayer-helmed movie was recently nominated for an Oscar award- one of the most esteemed awards in the film industry.
While the ‘Suicide Squad’ Oscar nomination does not put the movie under the same category as ‘La La Land’ for Best Picture, the behind-the-scenes team is set to compete with ‘Star Trek Beyond’ and more films for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. ‘Suicide Squad’ is being recognized for transforming DC characters into reality, including Margot Robbie’s complete costume as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto’s tattoos all over his face and body.
The ‘Suicide Squad’ Oscar nomination has not guaranteed a boost in the movie’s performance scores as it currently sits at 26 percent based on Rotten Tomatoes critics’ approval rating. On the other hand, fans have given the movie a higher approval rating of 63 percent. ‘Suicide Squad’ is centered on a group of villainous DC characters who were recruited by the government to aid in saving the world from destruction caused by a much more powerful being.
News of the ‘Suicide Squad’ Oscar nomination comes only a day after the movie received two nominations for the Razzie Awards, including Worst Screenplay and Worst Supporting Actor for Leto. The 45-year-old actor, together with Ayer, has already spoken up about the concerns relating to the ‘Suicide Squad’ release. A lengthy explanation was posted on Twitter, expressing the team’s regrets over the making of the film.
“Wish I had a time machine,” Ayer said. “I’d make Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story. I have to take the good and bad and learn from it ... I have to give the characters the stories and plots they deserve next time.”
Hosted by late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel, the 2017 Oscars is set to air on Feb. 26 at 7 pm E.T. on ABC.
