United States telecommunications company, AT&T, announced that their subscribers would be able to use their domestic plans abroad for only $10 a day starting January 27, 2017. Called the International Day Pass, this plan feature allows for unlimited calls and texts from any of the 100 listed countries, as well as allowing users to make use of their existing domestic data plan. This feature is a far better alternative to being charged per minute of call, text message or megabyte of data when abroad.
This is something that people are already experiencing with other telecommunications providers such as T-Mobile. This competitor has offered unlimited international data, text messages and discounted calls since 2013 as per The Verge's report. AT&T subscribers were offered a similar feature with the AT&T Passport that starts at $40 a month for only 200 MB of data, $1 per minute calls and unlimited texts. However, the new International Day Pass allows for an affordable alternative.
Availing of this new feature is very simple. All subscribers have to do is to add the plan to each of their devices once and it will be automatically available whenever they travel to the 100+ countries covered by AT&T. Removing the feature from your device is just as simply done on the myAT&T page. There is, however, a fine print to this service which subscribers should be aware of.
According to the terms set by AT&T for their Day Pass, "International Day Pass feature may be removed if international voice, text, or data usage exceeds 50% of total voice, text or data usage for two consecutive months."
