Leading Orlando police on manhunt lasting over a month, the accused cop-killer made his first appearance in court on Thursday. The court hearing did not go well for the suspect who cursed angrily at the judge and stated that the accusations against him were "made-up".
Forty-one-year old Markeith Loyd was charged in December with murder of his ex-girlfriend. According to investigators, while on the run, the man shot and killed a police officer outside Orlando Walmart who tried to stop him. The cop-killer in his hearing swore that the police were wrongly accusing him and beat him during the arrest.
As reported by Fox News, Loyd entered the courtroom with a bandage around his head as he reportedly was suffering from a fractured eye socket. He was restrained by guards during his speech. Loyd claimed that he crawled out of an abandoned home out to the road so the officers could take him in.
"They done took my eye. They done broke my nose, broke my jaw," he stated. An aerial video footage of Loyd was released on Thursday of his capture. Although the camera zoomed out while the officers approached, Loyd could be seen kicked by two officers in the head. In response to that, Police Chief John Mina said that their suspect was resisting arrest and had refused to place his hands behind his back.
Loyd declared that he would be representing himself. When reminded by Orange County Judge Jeanette Bigney that was being recorded and was under oath, he replied saying, "I'm not finished talking because y'all been making up s--- the whole time."
At the end of the hearing, the judge told the guards to take Loyd away and ordered that he be held without bond. Loyd responded with swearing and cursing at the judge. Loyd spent 21 hours in the hospital as reported by Fox 35. He was placed in jail on Wednesday night after receiving medical attention for his injuries at the time of his arrest.
Charged with first-degree murder and the unlawful killing of an unborn child, Loyd was ordered by the judge to stay away from his ex, Sade Dixon's, family. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said Wednesday, "We feel some relief knowing he's being brought to justice."
