There are times where some ventures into unknown fields fail. While some are catastrophic in terms of negative results, other will, if taken into an optimistic sense, result in at least something to be found or to be learned. However, there are times where one must cancel any further investigation into something, putting substantial amounts of time and effort to waste. Unfortunately, this happens to be one of those times, as Google has decided to stop further progression into solar-powered drones. What was once a dream has now been dashed aside, but the least that one could ask for in spite of all of this is something to learn from it.
The Verge announced that Google will stop exploring solar-powered drones and has in fact stopped the project about a year ago. Originally, the concept for the use of X, formerly known as the drone that Google had been tinkering with, was to offer access to the internet in rural areas of the world that lacked connectivity or access to something that is so common today. X's job was to beam down it down to these areas from high altitudes, but no longer. One of the reasons for the cause of this setback is because of the strict financial discipline imposed by Google Alphabet and Ruth Porat, the CFO, that held its grasp over X Labs.
There does seem to be some hope, however, as Business Insider claims that the team formerly working on X has had its members reassigned to different projects. While still holding their dream of bringing internet access to rural areas at high altitudes, Google has decided to focus on what is known as "Project Loon" for this possibility, stating that it was more technically feasible. Project Loon, however, has had its ups and downs considering that many key executives also left during the creation of Google Alphabet. Many are waiting to see what the next move of Google is as their projects continue to go through a roller coaster of changes.
