The Golden State Warriors are sitting on top of the NBA with a league-best 33-6 record. Thanks in part to the stellar play of their two-time reigning MVP, Stephen Curry. Curry, who had seemed to take a step back from his role as the main man for the Warriors with the arrival of Kevin Durant, reminded us why he is the reigning MVP. He averaged 31.8 points, 5.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1 steal per game while shooting a remarkable 50% from the floor.
This led the Warriors to a 3-1 record for the week, earning Stephen Curry the Western Conference Player of the Week Award. This is the 8th time he received this award for his career, which is the most for any Warrior, past of present. The award has been given to a Warrior a total of 45 times in the history of the NBA (NBA.com).
During the week, Stephen Curry tallied 3 straight 30 point games with a 40 point game in the OT loss to Memphis. He went for 18-48 from deep which helped him move past Dale Ellis and J.R. Smith to rank 14th overall in career three-pointers made. He also reached the 12,000 point margin during the game against Memphis on January 6. Curry is also leading the Western Conference in votes for 2017 All-Star game, and with performances like these, it is easy to see why.
It is good to see Curry in MVP form after he seemed to give way to Kevin Durant as being the first scoring option for the Warriors. Curry was more aggressive and took more shots this past week than he is averaging, which translated well for the team. If Curry can continue to assert himself more often, the combination of him and Durant (who averaged 26.5 points for the week) will be the scariest 1-2 combo in the league today.
