Hollywood multi-awarded actress and singer Meryl Streep has been bashed on Twitter by U.S President-elect Donald Trump for her speech after receiving a lifetime achievement award at The Golden Globes award ceremony held on Sunday night.
In her speech, Streep describes "one performance this year" that stunned her and "it sank it hooks" to her heart. She then continues by stating that there was no good about it, but it "was effective and it did its job" and has made the intended audience laugh and "show their teeth".
"It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter," she said, referring to a speech in 2015 when Mr. Trump shuddered and jerked his arms, appearing to mock a disabled reporter at The New York Times, Serge Kovaleski.
Streep also said that the incident has broken her heart and that she still can't get out of her head because it wasn't a movie but real life, reported CNN.
Throughout her speech, however, there was no mention of any specific name. In response, Trump posted on Twitter calling Streep as "a Hillary flunky" and also "one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood". He also emphasized that he never makes fun of the reporter.
"Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never "mocked" a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him "groveling" when he totally changed a 16-year-old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media! , "said Trump on his twitter posts.
The denunciation delivered by Ms. Streep drew applause from many other actors at the ceremony, but also received slashes online from Trump's allies such as Sean Hannity, Meghan McCain, and some other Republicans who are critical of Mr. Trump but labeled Hollywood liberals as only emboldening his supporters.
The New York Times described that Streep's speech did not seem intended to win people over, rather voice her frustration before Trump's inauguration, as she spoke dismissively of football and mixed martial arts at some point.
According to Ms. Streep, the entertainment industry is crawling with outsiders and foreigners and if they were to be kicked out, there will be nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.
The Globes were the last high-profile Hollywood event before the inauguration of the new United States President on Jan. 20, a transfer of power which many in the entertainment industry have bemoaned.
Trump, however, said he was confident that celebrities and others would turn out in strong numbers for the event and that "all the dress shops are sold out in Washington". He also said there would be an "unbelievable, perhaps record-setting turnout for the inauguration."
