‘La La Land’ proved to be the frontrunner at the recently concluded 74th Golden Globe Awards after winning every nomination and raking in seven awards. While it was recognized as the best musical or comedy, the film was also honored for its screenplay while director Damien Chazelle was also acknowledged for his work.
The film’s stars, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, both received acting awards under the musical or comedy category for compellingly portraying two lovers who breeze through their jobs, relationship and personal lives with singing and dancing.
Jimmy Fallon, this year’s Golden Globes host, opened the show with an opening number that served as tribute to ‘La La Land.’ The video began with Fallon singing with several stars, such as Amy Adams and Nicole Kidman, on their way to the event. John Travolta was also featured in the clip, along with the stars of Netflix’s breakout series ‘Stranger Things’ who were rapping from behind a truck.
Justin Timberlake and Ryan Reynolds also appeared in the ‘La La Land’ tribute.
From the 2017 Golden Globes highlights, female empowerment was most evident among the stars who accepted honors during the ceremony.
‘The Crown’ actress Claire Foy won Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama; she acknowledged the contributions of her character, Queen Elizabeth II, saying that “the world could do with a few more women at the center of it.” The Netflix series also received the award for Best Drama Series, triumphing over HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones.'
After winning Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for ‘Fences,’ actress Viola Davis paid tribute to Meryl Streep, who received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement.
A collection of clips covering Streep’s last four decades on the big screen was shown to the audience, highlighting her 30 nods and eight wins for the Golden Globes alone.
Audiences were then treated to a montage of Streep’s 40 years on the silver screen, 30 Golden Globe nominations and eight wins.
“Disrespect invites disrespect,” the 67-year-old actress said in her speech, pointing towards Donald Trump's insults at a disabled reporter. “When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
On a sweet note, Streep concluded her speech by offering a piece of advice given to her by the late actress Carrie Fisher: “Take your broken heart; turn it into art.”
The 2017 Golden Globes Awards was aired live on NBC from the Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
