10 Indian men are in custody after a 21-year-old woman was raped by two apparently unrelated groups of men on Christmas Eve in Pondicherry, BBC News reported.
The young was being treated in a hospital, and is eportedly in stable condition, according to BBC News.
The young woman was reportedly visiting friends when she was abducted by three men, and was then raped by one of them, officials said.
The woman found her friends after the assault, but all "were confronted by another group of men who singled her out and gang-raped her, according to police," BBC News reported.
"When they were going back they were waylaid by a second group, who again picked up the victim and she was taken to a secure place. There again she was sexually assaulted six times," according to news reports.
The suspects who were arrested have reportedly confessed to police.
They "have been remanded for 15 days, but they are yet to be formally charged in court, according to news reports. None of the suspects has publicly commented on the allegations made against them by the victim," according to the BBC.
The attackers were not known to the victim and these appear to be unrelated attacks, according to police.
Two officers "have also been suspended for initially refusing to register the victim's complaint," BBC News also reported.
The assaults come close to the year anniversary of the death of an Indian student whose gang-rape on a bus in Delhi sparked unprecedented public outrage in the country. The woman's death led to changes within India's laws against sexual violence.
